Dogsong By Gary Paulsen

Characters

Russel Susskit
Russel is a 14 year old boy, who lives with his father in a government village in Alaska. He is disturbed by the changes to his village, so he seeks help from the elder of his village, Oogruk. He learns how to dog sled and goes on an adventure, by sledding to the north, to try to get back to the old ways. He has to survive just with his dogs, a lance and a bow and arrow. After this adventure, he will have his own song, which no one has because most of the Eskimo culture has disappeared.
Oogruk
Oogruk is a blind, old Eskimo Shaman. After Russel was disturbed with the changes to their village, Russel spends lots of time with Oogruk. Oogruk tells Russel what the old ways were like and about how everybody had their song. Then, he gave Russel a vision to help him find his own song. As Russel was just leaving on his adventure in north Alaska, he tells Russel to bring him out to the frozen ocean, and to leave him there. That point was his resting point.
Russel's dad
Russel's dads wife ran away with a white trapper a time ago, so it was just Russel and his dad. Russel's dad was the guy that suggested that Russel go talk to Oogruk for help.
Nancy
Nancy is a pregnant girl that Russel finds laying in the snow to die. He save her and she helps him with feeding the dogs and just keeping Russel company. Russel helps her deliver her child, but sadly, the child was born dead. Soon after, she becomes very sick and Russel rushes her to the nearest village. Russel saves her life and she was extremely thankful for it.
